Influential American author (1804–1864) best known for such classic novels as The Scarlet Letter and The House of Seven Gables. Partly-printed DS, signed “N. Hawthorne,” one page, 6.75 x 8, February 16, 1854. Hawthorne approves Samuel Pearce as Vice Consul. Old tape across top edge, some wrinkling around seals, and a bit of light toning to right edge, otherwise fine condition. Document bears two intact paper seals.
